Intrisically Safe Categories

There are three Equipment Protection Levels (EPLs) / categories of Ex i equipment:

• Ex i (a) - EPL Ga suitable for Zone 0, 1 and 2 - Will continue to function safely with 2 faults
• Ex i (b) - EPL Gb suitable for Zone 1 or 2 - Will continue to function safely with 1 fault
• Ex i (c) – EPL Gc (formally energy limiting nL) - Will cease to function safely after 1 fault
